SAN Beda pulled off a pulsating 69-67 escape past Arellano for its first win in the NCAA Season 95 juniors basketball tournament on Monday at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Rookie guard Charles Delfino paced the Red Cubs with 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Justine Sanchez had a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards.
Cyrus Llarena and Troy Valencia also scored 10 as San Beda got the win by the skin of its teeth.
Defense, however, did the trick for the Red Cubs as Hans Nicdao stuffed Felix Villarente's potential game-tying layup in the last 5.1 seconds before the team snuffed an inbounds pass from Miguel Sahali.
Sanchez muffed two freebies, but Chris Recto's hail mary from three-fourths of the court went way short as time expired.
"Pasalamat kami kay Lord na na-stop namin yung dalawang possessions nila nung dulo. Bilib ako sa fighting spirit ng kalaban," said new coach Manu Inigo, who missed the services of Rhayyan Amsali, who is still with Gilas Pilipinas Youth.
Recto topped the Braves with 19 points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists, while Ivan Salinel got 10 points in the loss.
