JJ Sapinit finished with 22 points as Mapua-Malayan beat College of Saint Benilde-La Salle Greenhills, 78-71, on Tuesday in the battle of unbeaten teams in the NCAA Season 93 juniors basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Sapinit energized the Red Robins as he scored 16 points in the second half, including lay-up to cap off an 8-0 finish to avert a Mapua collapse.
Mapua took the solo lead in the standings with a 6-0 slate, while LSGH fell to 5-1.
Leading by as many as 13 points in the contest, the Red Robins nearly faltered with Albert Bordeos connecting on a three-point shot with 1:33 left in the fourth to give the Junior Blazers a 71-70 lead.
But Mapua regained its bearings in the clutch with Carl Bryan Lacap stripping Bordeos and completing a three-point play to reclaim the lead, 73-71. Another three-point play by Clint Escamis gave the Red Robins a comfortable margin en route to the win.
Warren Bonifacio contributed 11 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks, while Lacap chipped in 10 markers for the Red Robins.
Joshua David led the way for the Greenies with 24 points, while Joel Cagulangan contributed 10 points, six rebounds, and eight assists. Inand Fornilos had eight points and eight rebounds but, just like in their previous outing against Letran last week, was once again saddled with foul troubles early in the game.
