HIGH school basketball may have stopped for the meantime due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but San Beda Red Cubs skipper Migs Pascual is preparing as if the NCAA juniors tournament is just around the corner.

The 19-year-old said he is hopetul that the NCAA would be able to hold its 96th season to give him an opportunity to play his final season as a juniors player.

“Sana matuloy ang NCAA juniors this coming season kasi final year ko na sa high school,” Pascual said. “Gusto ko mag-champion kasi iba siyempre ‘yung pakiramdam na mag-champion sa final year.”

Despite the lull, the 5-11 point guard said the Red Cubs under coach Manu Inigo continue their workouts via Zoom in order to keep the team in shape amid the pandemic.

Pascual, who was named team captain this year, said he has also been busy doing extra work on his own.

“May mga preparations akong ginagawa ngayon like strength and conditioning and skills workout to prepare for my final year sa juniors and also for college next year,” said Pascual, who also once trained under PBA legend Allan Caidic.

By doing extra workouts, Pascual said he is leading by example.

“Inaasahan talaga kami ni coach pagdating sa leadership kaya kailangan mag-step up at kailangan maging accountable. Magandang challenge ‘yun para sa akin,” said Pascual, , who played for the national youth team in the 2017 Seaba Under-16 Championship and the 2018 Fiba Under-17 World Championship in Argentina alongside Kai Sotto.

Pascual said that as team captain, it will be an honor to contribute to the storied history of San Beda high school basketball before he moves on to college.

“Very thankful ako sa San Beda kasi na-mold ako since elementary days. Dahil sa kanila, naging part ako ng Batang Gilas at marami akong natutunan doon,” said Pascual.
