LETRAN pulled off a stunning 69-66 upset over CSB-La Salle Greenhills Tuesday in the NCAA Season 95 juniors basketball tournament at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Shawn Umali buried the back-breaking short stab with 20.4 seconds remaining to put the Squires up, 68-63 in what would be the biggest of his 17 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.
"Yun talaga sinabi ko sa kanya, na wag ka magmadali, wag mo pilitin, makaka-shoot ka rin nang maayos. Ayun, nag-step up naman siya nung dulo," said coach Raymond Valenzona of his big man.
Kobe Palencia still tried to make things interesting for the Greenies with his trey in the last 6.4 ticks, but Gabriel Cabal's split from the line in the final 4.7 seconds gave Letran a three-point breathing room.
LSGH still had a shot to force overtime, but RC Calimag's heave did not find the bottom of the bucket.
The Squires have won three of their last four games to rise to a 3-4 standing.
"Tingin ko, mas gusto ko yung galing sa baba, paakyat. Mas gusto ko yung nanggigigil sila," said Valenzona. "Nagusap-usap kami, malakas kayo kung titignan pero kung di kayo team, di tayo mananalo."
Shawn Argente added 13 points and four rebounds for Letran, Joshua Ramirez had a near double-double with nine points and 10 boards, while making three assists. Andrei Romenez added nine points and four rebounds.
The shock loss also spelled the end of the three-game winning run for the Greenies to fall to third place at 4-2.
Palencia saw his magnificent statline of 19 points, eight assists and six rebounds down the drain for LSGH, while Calimag added 19 points and three boards.
