LETRAN pulled off a big 82-78 come-from-behind win over defending champion Mapua Friday in the NCAA Season 95 juniors basketball tournament at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Neil Castor's pair of turnovers in the final minute proved to be costly for the Red Robins as CJ Saure scored the go-ahead lay-up with 14.5 seconds remaining before Shawn Argente buried a pair of freebies to put the Squires up, 81-78 in the last 7.3 ticks.

Mapua still had a shot to force overtime, but Megan Galang muffed his corner three, leading to a Shawn Umali split putting the final nail in the coffin for Letran.

CJ Saure led the Squires with a double-double of 16 points, 10 rebounds, and two assists, as Umali wound up with 16 points, eight boards, three assists, and three blocks.

Joshua Ramirez also chipped in 15 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals, as Andrei Romenez got 11 points and three boards for Letran as it improved to a 5-6 card.

"Malaking bagay ito para sa amin kasi defending champion nga tapos last time, talo kami dyan," said coach Raymond Valenzona. "Sabi ko lang sa kanila, mas maganda talunin natin ito at lahat ng tumalo sa atin ng first round, balikan natin."

Struggles continued for the skidding Red Robins, which stayed near the bottom of the standings at 3-7.

Castor's late miscues overshadowed his magnificent 24-point, 9-rebound, and 2-steal outing for Mapua.

Galang also had 11 points and four rebounds, Julian Jugo scored 13 points and three boards, while leading MVP contender Jonnel Policarpio only got himself 10 points and five rebounds in the defeat.

In the first game, Jose Rizal University made it back-to-back wins with a 78-57 romp of EAC-Immaculate Concepcion Academy.

Jonathan Medina led the Light Bombers with 14 points, nine rebounds, and three assists, while Vince Icban provided support with 14 points, seven boards, and three dimes to help their side rise to fourth place at 6-5.
