JOSE Rizal High School scalped foul-prone Mapua High School, scoring an 80-70 win to start its NCAA Season 94 juniors tournament campaign on Thursday at JRU Gym in Mandaluyong City.
Marwin Dionisio poured 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Thomas Vasquez added 12 points, four rebounds and three assists for the Light Bombers.
The pair were instrumental in staging the huge fourth quarter finishing kick for JRU, where it uncorked 17 points to down the fancied Red Robins.
Cadell Buno contributed 14 points, five assists and two boards, while John Amores added 13 points and eight rebounds although he made eight turnovers.
Clint Escamis picked up three fouls in the first quarter and already had four at the turn, and although he brought the Red Robins within three, 63-60, it didn’t take long before he was whistled with his fifth foul, an offensive foul after kicking while heaving a corner three with7:12 left.
JRU joined San Sebastian and Perpetual at the top of the standings at 1-0, while Mapua joins San Beda and Lyceum at 0-1.
Dan Sarias paced the Red Robins with 16 points, as Escamis settled for nine points, two rebounds and two blocks in their season opener.
