COLLEGE of St. Benilde remained perfect in Season 100 of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
The Blazers marched to their third straight win with a 77-55 rout of Emilio Aguinaldo College on Saturday at the FilOil EcoOil Arena to break free from University of Perpetual Help and take the solo lead.
St. Benilde was in the lead right from the get go since opening the game with a 7-0 run, and eventually hiking the lead to as high as 75-52 in the fourth quarter.
Tony Ynot still answered the call for the Blazers despite a death in the family, leading the team with 16 points, seven rebounds, and two assists, while Justin Sanchez and Jhomel Ancheta also contributed in double figures with 14 and 10, respectively.
“We’re happy with the win, especially going to the game against EAC because we believe they are a playoff contender team,” said winning coach Charles Tiu.
“We just stay humble and stay challenged,” he added on what the Blazers needed to do moving forward.
Big man Allen Liwag played his first game against his former team, but struggled on the offensive end by going 3-of-11 for seven points.
But he did grab a game-high 15 rebounds in leading the Blazers to a 54-44 edge pounding the boards against the Generals.
King Gurtiza had 13 points to pace Emilio Aguinaldo College, which went down to 1-2 after suffering its second straight loss.
Compounding the Generals’ woes were their 30 percent shooting (20-of-66).
