SAN Sebastian kept defending champion Mapua winless in the NCAA Season 95 juniors basketball tournament with a 64-62 stunner on Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Dylan Darbin starred for the Golden Staglets, uncorking 14 points and eight rebounds for their first conquest in the young season.
Randolph Perez chipped in 13 points and nine rebounds, as Milo Janao and Dave Balo both registered 10 points and nine boards.
"Malaking tulong ito sa kumpyansa namin. Galing last game, wala talaga kami, isang quarter lang kami naglaro pero at least, maiintindihan na ng mga bata na apat na quarter dapat ang lalaruin namin, di lang isa," said coach Melo Banua.
The Golden Staglets held on to the win for a 1-1 card, overcoming the Red Robins' 21-point fourth quarter comeback, with that rally coming up short as John Echavia missed his trey with 5.6 seconds remaining.
That defeat sent Mapua to a 0-2 start as coach Yong Garcia continues to be on the hunt for his first win at the helm.
Megan Galang topped the Red Robins with 21 points, four rebounds, four steals, two assists, and one block.
Gholam Garcia also continued to impress for Jose Rizal University as he towed the Light Bombers to an 85-69 trouncing of Letran.
The rookie poured an all-around effort of 23 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals as the Light Bombers rose to 2-1.
Condrad Famaranco chimed in 22 points, seven boards, and four dimes, as Celsus Fortuna got 10.
Joshua Ramirez carried the torch for the still-winless Squires (0-3) with his 17 points and three rebounds, while CJ Saure had 16 points, five boards, four assists, and two steals in the loss.
