JOEL Cagulangan showed the way as La Salle Greenhills scored an 81-78 victory over San Beda to close in on a Final Four seat in the NCAA Season 94 juniors basketball tournament on Thursday at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The shifty senior scattered 24 points, eight in a crucial fourth quarter stretch as the Greenies did just enough to hold off the Red Cubs, one win away from the semifinals. Cagulangan also had six rebounds and three assists.
Sydney Mosqueda dropped 10 of his 19 points in that final assault, and finished with three boards and three dimes, to keep CSB-LSGH on top at 13-2.
The Greenies stared at a five-point deficit, 72-67, with under four minutes to play before Mosqueda and Cagulangan conspired for a 9-3 run, which was also buoyed by an unsportsmanlike foul from Red Cub big man Joshua Lazaro, as they took the 76-75 lead with 1:55 remaining that set up the tight finish.
Inand Fornilos scored the go-ahead floater that put CSB-LSGH up, 78-77, before Cagulangan and Mark Sangco sealed the win from the charity stripe.
RC Calimag added 11 points and two rebounds, while Fornilos had seven points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.
San Beda failed to formalize its entry to the Final Four as it fell to a 10-5 record.
Penny Estacio paced the Red Cubs with 13 points and two rebounds, Winderlich Coyoca also went 4-of-7 from threes to nab 12 points and six boards, as Lazaro recorded a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.
