THE National Basketball League (NBL) is set to file charges against one of its former team owners in James Machate.
NBL chairman Celso Mercado said the league will press charges against Machate for issuing several bounced checks as payment of their entry fee. Machate has also been expelled as the team owner of the Quezon City Rising Stars, Mercado added.
According to Mercado, the NBL was left with no choice but to file a court case after the league were continuously receiving bounced checks for the entry fee.
“The case we filed hopes to serve as a warning to the basketball community. We don’t tolerate such fraudulent acts,” said Mercado.
The Rising Stars have since been taken over by new team owners Andrew Belarmino and Shelwin Sy following the expulsion of Machate.
