PHILIPPINE basketball legend Jimmy Alapag's status with the Sacramento Kings is still unclear following head coach Mike Brown's firing.
Brown, the former two-time Coach of the Year, was handed his walking papers on Saturday following Sacramento's slow 13-18 start to the season. He was instrumental in Alapag's hiring as the Kings' player development coach in August 2023.
The TNT legend moved back to the US during the pandemic after getting started in his coaching career as a deputy in Gilas Pilipinas and Meralco in the PBA and then shot-caller for Alab Pilipinas in the Asean Basketball League.
Not long after, Alapag joined Bobby Jackson's coaching staff for the Stockton Kings, Sacramento's G League affiliate before eventually moving up to the NBA ranks.
With Doug Christie now taking over as the Kings' interim coach, however, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the one-time PBA MVP and longtime national team captain.
Christie's head coaching debut will come against the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday (Philippine time). By then, we will see for sure whether or not Alapag will still be on the bench.
