THE VERY BEST OF high school basketball in the Philippines collided in the Araneta Coliseum last May 10, 2025 to secure a slot for the NBA Rising Stars Invitational main stage, an event which was supported by partners including 2K.

Among those watching the festivities in the Philippines is NBA star and San Antonio Spurs' power forward, Jeremy Sochan.

Sochan was able to get a glimpse of Philippines basketball, not only inside the hardwood but even outside.

From the fans swarming him, to his sudden appearance alongside Boom Gonzalez in the commentary desk, he witnessed the passion that Filipinos had for basketball.

"This past week has been great, watching basketball is something that I love," he started in an interview with the press.

He added: "One thing I found during this trip is the passion, the love, and the heart everyone has here with basketball, whether you're playing, coaching, watching, or spectating. There is so much passion and I truly respect that."

During the qualifiers, National University dominated both the male and women's high school basketball scene and upon watching many of the local aspirants play, the Polish-American basketball star was left with high praises.

"The kids playing out there they played hard, played fast, play on both sides of the court. It's been great that I see a lot of young talented hard workers. That's the most important thing. Talent doesn't always take you everywhere you have to have that mentality of working hard, or being just a 'dog," he reflected.

"I see a lot of heart and passion and it feels good for me to see this."

Comparisons to Dennis Rodman

Given his hairstyle and his approach in playing basketball, some members of the community would point him out as a modern version of NBA legend Dennis Rodman.

Throughout his career, Rodman has been renowned for his elite level defense and rebounding and most importantly his relentless drive to get the loose ball.

So how does Sochan respond to the comparisons?

"Being compared to players like Rodman, it is truly a blessing and an honor. I'm in the NBA and I want to make a name for myself. I want to be Jeremy Sochan. I take a lot of different things from different players in the league," said Sochan.

And while the comparisons have truly humbled him, Sochan remains to be grounded by his mission.

"Truly it's cool that I'm in an organization like the Spurs who have a rich history and I just want to add to that. I want to be the player who helps the team win and that's the most important thing."
