THE San Antonio Spurs held their first full practice in over a month on Monday (Tuesday, Manila time) and they had a special guest bringing in a unique treat.

Retired Spur and future Hall of Famer Tim Duncan dropped by the Spurs' full practice, their first since November 7, and he was no ordinary observer as he played in a friendly, intense, and unique one-on-one game with Pau Gasol.

Duncan only played defense and earns a point if Gasol missed. Based on the videos by mySanAntonio.com’s Jabari Young and San Antonio Express-News’ Jeff McDonald, Duncan held a 5-3 edge. But Gasol had a different tally.

“We tied,” said Gasol, with a laugh. “It’s just a good exercise and a good workout. It was fun to go do it with him.”

Gasol shared it was a spontaneous challenge initiated by Duncan himself after practice. And he came away with some pointers from Duncan, who will have his jersey retired at the AT&T Center on Sunday (Monday, Manila time).

“It was fun. It wasn’t planned, it just kind of happened. He challenged me defensively,” he said. “It was good to work on some post moves, got a couple of comments from him after.”

"Every time I go quick on my moves it makes a big difference, which is something pretty general but you have to keep in mind at all times what works best. He's a great defender, he always has been, he understands what works, what hurts him and what doesn't. I've just got to go a little quicker on my moves, be the aggressor, not just pound it pound it," added Gasol.

The Spurs team management is keeping open a role for Duncan, who spent all his 19 seasons in the NBA in leading San Antonio to five titles and perennial contender status.

Coach Gregg Popovich had even noted that the future Hall of Famer can be ‘coach of anything he wants’ should Duncan decide to rejoin the squad on the sidelines.
