FORMER NBA star Sam Perkins is just the first in a handful of players coming over to the country in the next few months to drum up interest in the NBA Global Games Philippines 2013.
“Sam won’t be the last (NBA) legend to come over to promote the Global Games. We hope to bring one or two more as the game comes closer,” said NBA country manager Carlos Singson during Tuesday’s media conference call to welcome Perkins at the Mall of Asia Arena for his four-day visit here.
Singson explained the 6-foot-9 Perkins, who arrived Monday night, will be conducting mall visits for the next three days at the MOA Arena and SM Megamall as part of the special program being conducted by the NBA and SM Group.
The NBA Global Games Philippines 2013 will feature the Houston Rockets and the Indiana Pacers in the first-ever pre-season game in the country.
SM marketing and sponsorship head Nicole Deato said they are not closing the doors on the possibility of seeing the likes of NBA legends like Hakeem Olajuwon and even Clyde Drexler come to the country and help promote the NBA Global Games.
“Yes, the NBA is supporting the SM Group by bringing in NBA talents to promote the October 10 games. Filipinos can expect more NBA legends to visit the country to promote the games,” Deato said.
Olajuwon and Drexler were teammates with Houston when they helped the Rockets score a
4-0 Finals sweep of Shaquille O’Neal and the Orlando Magic to win the franchise’s second straight NBA championship in 1995.
