The Charlotte Hornets owner – and the only Black majority owner in the league – has stepped up to be an intermediary between fellow team owners and players over racial injustice issues that prompted a walkout for the second straight day and left them pondering on a cancellation of the playoffs altogether.
Jackie MacMullan of ESPN reported the development on Friday, Manila time, saying Jordan reached out to NBA Players Association president and Oklahoma City Thunder star Chris Paul ahead of the owners meeting to understand where the players are coming from and offer help as they bring their case to the board of governors.
“Michael is the perfect person to be in this role,” said a league official who is involved in the discussions. “He’s been a high-profile player who has won championships. He’s also the owner of a small-market team. He has great credibility both with players and the owners.”
MacMullan reported the owners were “unanimous in their support of players” as they talked about how they can be of assistance.
“Right now, listening is better than talking,” Jordan was quoted as saying in his speech later to fellow owners in their virtual meeting.
