DEMAR DeRozan became the first player since Michael Jordan to score 30 or more points in the first five games of a season as the Toronto Raptors defeated the visiting Miami Heat, 96-87, on Friday (Saturday, Manila time).

DeRozan finished with 34 points on 14 of 26 shooting to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Terrence Ross came off the bench for 20 points and Kyle Lowry added 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists as the Raptors notched their fourth win in five games.

It was the teams’ first meeting since Toronto eliminated Miami in a seven-game semifinals series in last season’s playoffs.

The Raptors shrugged off a slow start and led by as many as 16 points before the end of the first half. The Heat rallied and were only down by three at the end of the third quarter, 75-72.

Hassan Whiteside had 21 points and 16 rebounds while Goran Dragic added 17 points and five assists in the Heat’s third loss of the season.
