MARC Gasol calmly sank the game-winning free throws to help the undermanned Memphis Grizzlies erase a late 13-point deficit to stun the Orlando Magic, 95-94, on Thursday (Friday, Manila time) at the FedEx Forum.
Trailing 84-71 midway in the fourth, Grizzlies unleashed 13-1 run to get to within one, 85-84, with 3:29 left and set up a frantic finish.
Evan Fournier and Nikola Vucevic took over in scoring Orlando’s next nine points, but Memphis always had a counter to keep within reach, 94-93, after a JaMychal Green triple with just 47 seconds left.
Vucevic then missed on his own attempt from deep from beyond the arc, setting up Gasol’s go-ahead free throws off a foul from Bismack Biyombo to put Memphis up for good with 12 ticks remaining. Green sealed comeback with a steal in the next play.
Gasol led the Grizzlies with 25 points while Troy Daniels came up big off the bench with 19 markers. Green started for Zach Randolph and added eight points, seven rebounds, and two steals to help Memphis to a 12-8 record and break a two-game skid.
Fournier finished with 28 points to lead all scorers and Vucevic added 18 markers and 11 rebounds off the Magic bench. Jeff Green and Serge Ibaka chipped in 14 and 11 points, respectively, but Orlando fell to 7-12 with the loss.
