AN anonymous fan paid nearly $180,000 for a piece of Los Angeles Lakers history - a piece of the Staples Center court signed by Kobe Bryant after his final home game in April.
Bryant signed the hardwood shortly after his final home game on April where he scored 60 points, including the game winning basket, against the Utah Jazz. The Lakers laid out a special court just for the occasion featuring both of the five-time NBA champion’s jersey numbers, 8 and 24.
The online auction was on behalf of the Lakers Youth Foundation which placed the signed No. 8 memorabilia (comprising four hardwood panels measuring four feet by eight feet each) under the hammer. Bidding started at $100 increments and netted 202 bids from April 27 to May 16.
On Kobe’s farewell game, the Staples Center announced that it sold a single day record of $1.2 million in merchandise.
