Is a change to 40-minute quarters a possibility in NBA?

FIBA games, after all, don't go 48 minutes

IN the 78-year history of the NBA, games have been played in 12-minute quarters.

Current commissioner Adam Silver, however, personally has a different direction on his mind.

"As we get more involved in global basketball, the NBA is the only league that plays 48 minutes. And I am a fan of four 10-minute quarters," said Silver on the "The Dan Patrick Show," as reported by ESPN.

"I'm not sure many others are... I think that a two-hour format for a game is more consistent with modern television habits."

Of course, the NBA is actually not the only league that plays 48 minutes, as so does the PBA.

FIBA rules, however, have always enforced 10-minute quarters in its competitions, just like Olympic and collegiate games.

To be clear, there is nothing on the table about changing the length of NBA games. Silver's remark was more personal than procedural.

Still, it's an interesting exercise to think what may happen if the NBA's quarters will be lessened by two minutes, as it will have an impact in the likes of league records, averages, playing time, and ultimately, salaries.
