FORMER NBA star Sam Perkins is coming over to Manila next week to spearhead the `100 Day Countdown’ of the first ever NBA Global Games Philippines 2013.
Perkins, a member of the 1984 US men’s basketball team that won the gold in the Los Angeles Olympics, will be in Manila from July 1 to 4 to promote the very first NBA pre-season game in the country and Southeast Asia featuring the Indiana Pacers and the Houston Rockets.
The Pacers-Rockets match is set October 10 at the Mall of Asia Arena and is part of the NBA’s comprehensive Global Games schedule.
The 52-year-old Perkins, a teammate of the great Michael Jordan and James Worthy in the North Carolina team that won the 1982 US NCAA title, played the final three seasons of his colourful 17-year NBA career with the Pacers.
He was selected fourth overall in the 1984 Draft by the Dallas Mavericks and also had stints with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Seattle Supersonics.
During his stay here, the native of Brooklyn, New York will be making mall visits and participate in special programs conducted by the NBA and SM Group.
The NBA Global Games will see eight NBA teams play in eight cities in six countries this October.
The schedule -- which will feature the Chicago Bulls, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Philadelphia 76ers and Washington Wizards -- will also include the first-ever NBA preseason game in Brazil, and in the cities of Bilbao, Spain, and Manchester, England.
It will also include games in Beijing, Istanbul, Shanghai, and Taipei.
To date, the NBA has staged 138 preseason and regular-season games in 19 countries and regions across Europe, the Americas and Asia since 1978.
