BOBBY Ray Parks will be facing off with former PBA imports Orlando Johnson and Jarrid Famous when their teams meet in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
Parks, listed at 6-4 and 205 lbs in the Mavs roster. will be suiting up for Dallas in the Summer League after going undrafted in the NBA draft. He makes his debut on Sunday (Manila time) in a game against the New Orleans Pelicans.
When Parks rounds out his Mavericks stint on Wednesday, he will be crossing paths with two familiar faces in Johnson and Famous who are both in the Summer League roster of the Washington Wizards.
Johnson, who is trying to work his way back to the NBA after an earlier stint with the Indiana Pacers, last played for Ginebra which he led to the playoffs in the ongoing PBA Governors Cup.
On the other hand, the 6-11 Famous led GlobalPort to a quarterfinal finish in the same tournament and currently leads the statistical race for the Best Import award in the season-ending PBA conference.
Like Parks, Famous, 26, was not selected when the big man from South Florida declared for the 2011 draft. Johnson fared a little better, taken as the 36th overall pick in the 2012 draft by the Sacramento Kings.
The official website of the Mavericks mentioned Parks as “ a highly touted domestic high school recruit before he moved to the Philippines. Ultimately he was eligible for the 2015 draft but wasn’t selected, leading him to sign with Dallas for his first American pro basketball audition... Parks already has the physical frame to play in the league. All that’s left is showing he has what it takes to earn a roster spot.”
Johnson and Famous are not the only former PBA imports competing for spots in the NBA through the Summer League.
Also seeing action are CJ Leslie (GlobalPort, 2015 Commissioner's Cup) for Sacramento, Josh Davis (Meralco, 2015 Commissioner's Cup) for Atlanta, Dominique Sutton (Air21, 2014) for Golden State, Liam McMorrow (Barako, 2015 Governors Cup) for the LA Clippers, Henry 'Bill' Walker (Alaska, 2014 Governors Cup) for the Miami Heat, Othyus Jeffers (Talk 'N Text, 2014 Governors Cup) with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Vernon Macklin (Ginebra, 2013 Commissioner's Cup) for Orlando, and Daniel Orton (Purefoods, 2015 Commissioner's Cup) for Portland.
