Bobby Ray Parks hopes NBA journey will open door for more aspiring Filipino players

    Jul 14, 2015

KNOWN as an explosive scorer in college, Bobby Ray Parks said he is putting premium on defense as he suits up with the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Summer League.

Parks said he tried to bring energy and a defensive mentality to the Mavericks, from the time he took on New Orleans’ Seth Curry, younger brother of NBA MVP Steph Curry, in his first outing in the Summer League.

“Kung ano lang ‘yung matutulong ko sa team, specifically sa akin ‘yung energy ko and ‘yung defensive mindset ko na malaki akong guard na kaya kong bumantay ng uno at saka dos,” the 22-year-olf guard said.

Parks said he tried to bring that defensive mentality every game, even if he played on limited time.

“Just to be efficient. ‘Yung binibigay sa akin na playing time, kailangang ipakita ko ‘yung maibibigay ko sa team,” said Parks.

The NBA journey of the two-time UAAP MVP out of National University has attracted support from the entire Filipino community, including those based in Las Vegas and nearby areas.

Parks added he hopes his stint with the Mavericks will open the door for more Filipino players trying their luck to make the NBA in the future.

“Sobrang blessing. They are supporting me out here, not just putting me on the map but also for the country. It’s a step to the door for the whole Filipino community, may not be for me but for the next generation,” said Parks.
