PCU provides opening fireworks in NAASCU by stunning St. Clare in overtime

    Aug 18, 2017

PHILIPPINE Christian University provided the opening-day surprise by beating defending champion St. Clare College-Caloocan, 89-88, in overtime in the NAASCU Season 17 men’s basketball tournament at the Cuneta  Astrodome in Pasay City.

Von Tambeling and Mike Ayonayon struck hardest for the Dolphins, who proved steadier  at crunchtime to escape with the victory.

Tambeling finished with 28 points, while Ayonayon added 24 points for the Dolphins, who are gunning for their first NAASCU title.

Paeng Rebugio led St. Clare with 24 points, six rebounds and four assists. His short jumper with 8.3 seconds left that sent the game into overtime.

Overshadowed by PCU’s hard-earned triumph were Colegio de San Lorenzo, which whipped  Manuel Luis Quezon University, 101-82;  Our Lady of Fatima, which crushed La Salle-Araneta University, 82-66; and AMA University, which nipped City University of Pasay, 82-76.

The ‘Twin Towers’ of  Soulemane Chabi Yo and Jon Gabriel provided the offensive muscle for  the Griffins, who are looking for a fitting follow-up to their successful  title campaign in the  MBL Open last June.

Yo asserted himself on both ends of the floor to finish with a double-double of 26 points and 16 rebounds.

Globalport Batang Pier team manager Bonnie Tan delivered the inspirational remarks, while NAASCU president Dr. Ernesto Jay Adalem of St. Clare College made the welcome remarks.

PBA legend Pido Jarencio is the  commissioner.
