CHICAGO - It’s official. Mike Phillips is headed to the MPBL.
“Mike will be flying over to Manila in a few days to play for the San Juan Knights,” the player’s US-based camp told me via text message early Monday morning.
In taking his talents to the Manny Pacquuao-founded league, Phillips’ handlers emphasized “a focus on staying prepared and available for the upcoming Gilas Pilipinas window.”

Asked to comment about the length and value of the deal, the former UAAP star’s reps politely declined comment.
But a source with knowledge of the negotiations said the Phillips contract is for one season and at least P850, 000 a month.
Believing that “Motor Mike” is the last piece they need to complete a championship puzzle, the Tanduay-backed Batangas Rum Masters made a hard push late but fell short.
SUPER STUD.
One of the most decorated players to come out of the Philippine collegiate scene, Phillips is a two-time champion at La Salle and the Finals MVP for Season 88.
Still approaching his prime at age 23, the 6-foot-8 forward adds intrigue and star power to a resurgent MPBL where former Ateneo star Dave Ildefonso and the Abra Weavers reign supreme.
Phillips had overseas offers on his lap but coming back “home” to hopefully fulfill the long-held dream to represent the Philippines proved irresistible.

How about the PBA?
“It’s definitely an option and something we’re preparing for,” his camp replied.
Sweet.
The top half of the Season 51 PBA Rookie Draft next January just got crowded.
