MPBL vows strict implementation of P50,000 monthly salary cap for players

TO control the rising salaries of players in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League, the Commissioner’s Office has vowed strict implementation of the salary cap rule.

MPBL players' monthly salaries, which the league prefers to call allowances in line with its amateur status, should not be lower than P15,000 and higher than P50,000, according to league commissioner Kenneth Duremdes.

“Yun ang nasa guidelines natin. We’re basing it that way because we’re still an amateur league,” Duremdes told the team owners/managers during a meeting at the Century Hotel in Manila.

Duremdes vowed violators will be given stiff sanction by the league.

“If a team is complaining that another team is giving a certain player more than the maximum allowance required, kailangan namin ng black and white proof na yung player na ito is receiving yung certain amount na pinirmahan niya,” added Duremdes.

    The league is also bent on implementing strict measures on players transfers. By the third season, players whose contracts have already expired, will need to get a release from their mother teams before they can move to another squad.
