MPBL takes steps to avoid repeat after game called off due to damaged rim

MPBL: Muntinlupa-Navotas match to be resumed if game has bearing in standings
    Jul 29, 2018

MAHARLIKA Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) commissioner Kenneth Duremdes said the match between Navotas and Muntinlupa that was stopped on Saturday night due to a damaged rim will be resumed on the last day of the elimination round, but only if the game will have a bearing on the playoff race.

The match between Muntinlupa and Navotas was stopped with one minute and 35 seconds left in overtime and the Clutch down three, 98-95, after a three-point attempt by Navotas cager Kyle Neypes detached the ring from its base.

Though the rim was still in place, MPBL officials called off the match by declaring the court unplayable.

“Kung hindi magkaroon ng epekto, wala siya sa standings ng both teams, hindi na itutuloy,” said Duremdes on Sunday. “Pero kung meron siyang bearing sa both teams, quotient o kailangan manalo either Muntinlupa or Navotas, itutuloy ang laro.”

Duremdes said the league was forced to stop the match as there was no replacement rim at the venue.

I asked the head of the facility, wala sila replacement. We still have 1:35 (to play) and Muntinlupa up three in overtime. Hindi siya playable,” Duremdes said.

"I consulted my technical officials George Magsino and Bai Cristobal. Sabi nila, i-reset na lang sa last playing day of elimination.

Duremdes also said the league will now be taking steps in order to avoid a repeat of the incident, one of which is to always be ready with replacement rims during games.

“We do ocular. At least, nakita natin na by next game, we will bring our own goal," said the former PBA MVP.

Ngayon kailangan may ring na,” said Duremdes.

Duremdes also said the MPBL will also ask Navotas to improve the playing conditions inside the stadium as players were also noticeably slipping during the match.

“Actually, nung first conference, inayos nila ‘yung court.

Actually, hindi lang Navotas, every home team na magho-host, we see to it na it’s playable.

Lalo na ngayong rainy season, kailangan talaga ma-address ‘yan,” said Duremdes.

Duremdes said the Clutch will have to find a different venue for the team’s home matches if playing conditions at the Navotas Sports Complex will not improve.

“Hopefully, by that time, na-fix na nila ‘yung venue. May mga home games pa sila. But then I advised them to fix it kasi kung hindi playable ‘yung court nila, pahahanapin muna namin sila ng alternate venue. Kung meron sa Navotas, much better,” said Duremdes.
