MANILA SV Batang Sampaloc hit full throttle in the second half as it routed Marikina, 91-76, on Wednesday to keep in step with the top teams of the North Division in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL), Wedensday, at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
Powered by Greg Slaughter, Jan Jamon and Tonino Gonzaga, the Stars blew the game wide open, 89-67, and cruised to the finish line for their 14th win against 5 losses in the round-robin elimination phase of the 29-team tournament.
Gonzaga wound up with 22 points, 8 rebounds and five assists, while Slaughter posted a double-double of 17 points and13 rebounds plus four assists.
Jamon contributed 15 points while Enzo Navarro chipped in 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.
With Slaughter asserting his 7-foot frame inside, Manila ruled the boards, 56-30, and exploited it to score more second-chance points, 26-9.
Eric Pili led the way for the Shoemasters with 19 points while Ahron Estacio chipped in 14 points, four assists and four steals but it wasn’t enough as Marikina fell to 6-13.
The MPBL heads to the Kamalig Gym in Oriuon, Bataan on Thursday, August 1, with games pitting Rizal against Davao at 4 p.m., Bacolod against Batangas at 6 p.m., and San Juan against Bataan at 8 p.m.
