NEGROS erased an 18 point deficit to shock Pangasinan, 87-86 and keep its playoff hopes alive in Season 6 of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in San Fernando, Pampanga on Monday.
Trailing 55-37, JR Raflores and John Rey Villanueva led the comeback before Felipe Chavez and Miguel Gabriel Ramos put the finishing touches for the Muscovados on the dizzying comeback.
A three-point play from Chavez trimmed the Heatwaves lead to one, before a turnover led to a Ramos basket on the other end as Negros improved to 9-11 for the tournament.
Villanueva and Raflores led the Muscovados with 18 points apiece while Renz Palma added 15. Chavez had himself a nice all-around game with 13 points, six assists and five rebounds.
JP Maguliano and Ralph Robin had 19 and 18 respectively for the Heatwaves but it wasn’t enough as they dropped to 7-12.
In the other game, Muntinlupa also kept its flickering playoff hopes alive after outlasting the eliminated Bulacan.
The Cagers capped the night with a 7-2 run as they stole the victory from the embattled Kuyas and improved to 6-13 for the tournament.
Marcos led the way for the Cagers with 11 points, five assists, four rebounds and a couple of steals.
Bulacan, which dropped to 2-18, got 17 points from Jasper Derek Cuevas.
The MPBL returns to the San Andres Sports Complex on Tuesday, July 23, with games pitting Sarangani against Iloilo at 4 p.m., Marikina against Valenzuela at 6 p.m., and Batangas against Pampanga at 8 p.m.
