The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) was forced to cancel its Lakan Season games on Monday (October 28) after a sudden heavy downpour rendered the Navotas Sports Center unplayable.
The score was tied at 22 between the Batangas City Athletics and the Cebu City Sharks with 7:33 to go in the second quarter when Commissioner Kenneth Duremdes called a halt to the game as the court became too slippery and dangerous for the players.
Also cancelled were the games pitting Zamboanga Family’s Brand Sardines against the Manila Stars and Makati Super Crunch against the Navotas Clutch.
“It rained hard before the first game and by the second quarter, the floor was already moist,” said Duremdes. “Our foremost consideration is the safety of the players.”
This marked the third time that MPBL games were cancelled in Navotas. The first was when the basketball ring was broken last July 29, 2018, and the second was when inclement weather also rendered the playing court unplayable on August 3.
The MPBL goes to the Pasig Sports Complex on Tuesday (October 29) with Pasay battling Bicol at 6:30 p.m. and Pasig Sta. Lucia tackling Mindoro at 8:30 p.m.
