CEBU CITY - There’s no place like home.
This was what veteran wingman Patrick Jan Cabahug asserted as he led the Cebu City Sharks-Casino Ethyl Alcohol past the Laguna Heroes, 77-75, in a double overtime thriller in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Datu Cup on Saturday night at the packed Hoopsdome in Lapu-Lapu City.
“Iba talaga kapag sa Cebu ka naglalaro!” said Cabahug shortly after he capped off his heroic night with the game-winning three-pointer with 4.8 seconds left.
Things were looking bleak for the Sharks in the second overtime as they were down one with 20 seconds left and the Heroes inbounding. However, Cebu City guard Harold Cincoflores stole the ball on Laguna’s inbound play, eluded two defenders on his way upcourt and found Cabahug on the right wing who rose over Elvin Chan and rattled home the go-ahead triple, much to the delight of the partisan Cebuano crowd.
Cabahug scored 14 of his 20 points in the fourth period and the two overtime periods. He added six rebounds and two assists.
Alfred Codilla also had a hand in giving Cebu City the victory as he helped rally the Sharks from a 41-50 deficit at the start of the fourth canto. He finished with 14 points.
But the night was Cabahug’s who checked in in the waning moments of the fourth period and immediately delivered, sinking a trey to tie the game up at 59-all and send the game to overtime.
The Sharks also trailed, 63-65, but Cabahug saved them once again from the jaws of defeat with a pull-up jumper that knotted the count at 65-all to send the contest to a second overtime.
The Sharks now hold a 6-9 win-loss record while the Heroes fell to 7-8.
Lord Casajeros led Laguna with 18 points and eight rebounds.
In the first game, the San Juan Knights picked up their 12th win in 15 games with a 77-50 rout of the Imus Bandera. Mac Cardona provided instant offense off the bench as he piled up 13 points in just 12 minutes of action.
Imus dropped to 6-7.
