THE South All-Stars beat the North All-Stars, 109-84, on Sunday early morning in the first-ever MPBL All-Star Game at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Jeff Viernes had 19 points to lead the South All-Stars in the game that perhaps will be remembered by how late it started as the All-Star game began on Sunday, 12:01 a.m. and ended at 1:17 a.m.
Nevertheless, the South All-Stars won the P500,000 top prize for claiming the All-Star match.
Viernes, who plays for the Batangas City Athletics, was later named Most Valuable Player after scoring 14 points in the third quarter where the South All-Stars pulled away after outscoring the North All-Stars, 38-20.
Gab Banal of the Bacoor Strikers had 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Jaymo Eguilos of Batangas City and Reed Juntilla of Zamboanga each had 11 points for the South All-Stars.
Gerald Anderson of Marikina scored nine points and also hit two three-point buzzer-beaters at the end of the second and third quarters for the South All-Stars.
Chris Bitoon of Manila had 11 points, while Mike Ayonayon of San Juan and Jay Collado of Quezon City had 10 points each for the North All-Stars.
