NORTH survived the exploits of Sen. Manny Pacquiao to beat the South, 102-100, on Saturday in the MPBL All-Star Executive Game at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Makati team owner Paolo Orbeta and Bataan team manager Borgie Hermida hit key baskets as North regained the lead after Pacquiao hit a crucial free throw to put the South ahead.
North spoiled the effort of Pacquiao, who had 28 points and eight rebounds in the game that included team owners, team managers, and coaches of the league. The MPBL founder also shot 11 of 32 from the field and hit three three-pointers in the game.
Orbeta, a former cager from College of Saint Benilde, had 27 points and 14 rebounds including a three-point play with 37 seconds left in the match to give North a 98-97 lead.
Orbeta missed the bonus free throw but Hermida scored on the follow-up with 30 seconds left to give the North a three-point lead, a cushion enough to pick up the win.
Hermida, who played for San Beda in his collegiate days, had 20 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists for the North.
South trailed by as many as 10 points, but took a 97-96 lead on split free throws by Pacquiao with 42 seconds left in the match.
