THE MMDA Black Wolves whipped the DOJ Avengers, 104-87, recently for their first win in three games in the UNTV Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena.

The Black Wolves used a late 24-10 run led by Peter John Villanueva and Ermel Idria, while the Avengers just did not have enough firepower to mount a comeback after DOJ main man Paul Reguerra fouled out in the middle of the fourth quarter.

Villanueva led MMDA with 21 points and four assists, while Ermel Idria finished with 13 points. Former PCU standout Ian Garrido led DOJ with 27 points and 13 rebounds.

MMDA improved its win-loss record to 1-2, while DOJ remained winless in three games.

The AFP Cavaliers survived a late charge by the LGU Vanguards to score a 101-98 win, while PhilHealth beat the Malacañang Patriots, 76-61, for their third straight victory.

It was a close AFP-LGU match, with the teams tied 41-all at halftime and the AFP leading by just three points at the end of the third quarter.

Vanguards reinforcement players Ervic Vijandre and Kiko Adriano then carried the LGU team to within four points, 99-95.

LGU center Francis Zamora nailed a three-pointer from the left wing to close the gap to within one with a few seconds remaining but Cavaliers point guard Joel Jabar converted on two free-throws off an intentional foul to push back the lead to three.

Winston Sergio paced the Cavaliers with 25 points, while Alvin Zuniga provided all-around support with 21 points, seven assists and three steals. Vijandre and Adriano led the Vanguards in scoring with 40 and 31, respectively.

AFP has won three straight for a 3-1 record while LGU holds a 1-2 card.

Swingman Jesson Alfeche had 22 points and four steals to lead Philhealth to a 3-0 card, while Alex Noriega scored 21.
