UNIVERSITY of the East defeated Letran, 76-64, in a Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup game Wednesday marred by poor shooting from both teams.

The Red Warriors came out victorious despite making only 22 of their 76 shots at The Arena in San Juan. Faring even worse were the Knights who hit only 16-of-62 from the field.

In all, both teams missed a hundred field goal attempts between them.

The Red Warriors improved their record to 3-2 in Group B, while the Knights evened their slate at 3-3.

Ironically, both teams also shot poorly from the foul line, where the Warriors finished 30-of-51 and the Knights 26-of-44.

“Hindi ako puwede mag-dahilan,” said UE coach Boysie Zamar, when asked if the team came out rusty following a week of training in Indonesia. “But we need games like this in our UAAP preparation.”

Chris Javier poured in 18 points and nine rebounds for the Red Warriors, who also got a double-double effort from Charles Mammie and Roi Sumang.

Mammie, the team’s import from Sierra Leone, had 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Sumang chipped in 10 points and 10 assists.

Ford Ruaya had 13 points for the Knights, who also got 11 from Fidel Castro.

Big man Raymund Almazan had seven points but was 0-for-7 from the field.

The Warriors were ahead 54-50 at the end of the third, but opened the final quarter with an 8-3 run.

With the Knights missing their free throws, the Warriors readily took advantage as Adrian Santos converted a three-point play for a 71-60 UE lead in the final 1:29

Letran went 6-of-12 from the foul line in the fourth.

After beating last season's NCAA runner-up, UE will next face UAAP runner-up University of Santo Tomas on Saturday for the first time since both teams figured in a fight-marred game in the MBL Open two months ago that saw the Tigers walk out of the match.
