MIGHTY Sports-Go For Gold Philippines overpowered Taiwan-A, 97-74, and captured the William Jones Cup championship with still one playing date left at the Xinzhuang Gym in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
Behind the inside forays of former PBA import Renaldo Balkman and Eugene Phelps and the sniping of McKenzie Moore, Mighty-GFG took an early 24-14 advantage which they protected to win convincingly for the sixth time in seven games.
With a 7-0 record that included a close win over South Korea, the country’s representative to the annual tournament is already certain of winning its second title in four years.
The Mighty-GFG players are going to meet the second team of the host country tomorrow but no matter what happens, they are already assured of the championship.
South Korea, which is fine-tuning for the World Cup in September in China, is the only team which can tie Mighty-GFG having a 6-1 mark. But the Charles Tiu-mentored squad had beaten the Koreans, 89-82, on Tuesday.
Mighty is hoping to duplicate its 8-0 feat three years ago.
All 12 players fielded by Tiu scored two points or more with Balkman leading the team with 21. Phelps once again dominated the paint to add 17 points.
Adams chipped in 13, Moore had 10 while Jeremiah Gray, Mikey Williams and Joseph Yeo combined for 22 points in another well-balanced attack.
