    Mighty Sports withstands late Sealions rally in Espiritu Cup

    Former PBA MVP Kenneth Duremdes comes up with a near double-double of 12 points and nine rebounds for Mighty Sports.

    MIGHTY Sports withstood Sealions' fiery fourth-quarter rally and escaped with a 107-100 win on Sunday in the 2013 Danny Espiritu Cup basketball tournament at Reyes Gym in Mandaluyong.

    Sealions scored 26 points in a span of six minutes in the payoff period to trim a huge deficit to just four, 100-96, with 42 ticks left.

    But Kenneth Duremdes, Edrick Ferrer and Gerard Francisco came through in the dying seconds and helped Mighty Sports improve its win-loss record to 2-2.

    A skirmish broke out with under seven minutes to play, leading to led to the ejection of Mighty Sports’ Marlou Aquino and Jam Alfad of Sealions.

    Niño Marquez led Mighty Sports in scoring with 22, including five triples. Duremdes had a near double-double of 12 points and nine rebounds, while Ferrer scored 20.

    Meanwhile, undermanned Naughty Needlez finally barged into the win column of the tournament named after sports agent Danny Espiritu as it nipped Expert Global Solutions, 69-60.

    Vaughn Canta had a team-high 14 points while James Martinez, Raymond Aguilar and Elvis Tolentino each added 12.

    Sealions suffered its second straight setback for a 3-2 slate, while EGS dropped its fourth assignment.
