Mighty Sports thinking big, ready to take act to fledgling PCBL

FROM minor leagues, Mighty Sports Apparel and Accessories takes its act to big-time caging as it is set to join the Pilipinas Commercial Basketball League (PCBL).

Team representative Caesar Angelo Wongchuking confirmed Mighty Sports has committed to play in the next conference of the fledgling league set to open sometime this month.

“We felt that it is time to join the bigger league because of our passion for basketball,” said Wongchuking.

Mighty Sports has been a fixture in smaller basketball tournaments and has been supporting teams such as Adamson in the UAAP and the Bulacan State University squad in the Filsports Basketball Association.

Its entry in the PCBL however, will be the company’s first foray in a major league carrying their own brand.

Wongchuking felt it was the right time to join the PCBL.

“More of passion lang (joining basketball leagues). We also want marketing reach para naman may mapuntahan ‘yung passion namin sa basketball,” he said.

Wongchuking said Mike Fermin will be the head coach of Mighty with Charles Tiu as assistant, although no players have officially signed up with the team.

“Very raw pa (‘yung details). I don’t want to say names kasi wala pang na-finalize,” he said.

Despite its entry in the PCBL, Wongchuking said Mighty Sports has no plans to join the PBA yet.

“It’s not in our plans. It’s too expensive for us. Amateur, okay na. We felt that joining in the amateur league will give us more mileage,” said Wongchuking.

The company, under the name Malolos Mighty, recently captured the Republica Cup as two-time UAAP Most Valuable Player Kiefer Ravena led the team to victory over Hobe Macway Travel, 85-82.
