Perasol facing challenge on how to spread minutes among seven Mighty imports in Jones Cup

Mike Singletary and six other imports hav been tapped to reinforce Mighty Sports.

LOADED with talent after tapping seven imports, Mighty Sports now faces the challenge of assigning roles and fitting each player into coach Bo Perasol’s system as they gun for the 2016 William Jones Cup title.

The imports did not arrive at the same time and Perasol admits they had to review plays that have earlier been drawn.

Former PBA imports Al Thornton, Vernon Macklin, Zach Graham, Michael Singletary, and Hamadi N’Diaye, were hired along with KBL import Dewarick Spencer and Troy Gillenwater for Mighty Sports' campaign in Taipei.

“Ang initial challenge talaga is paano sila maglalaro together,” said Perasol on Wednesday. “Magsisimula na kasi and we have to go back again sa mga initial plays namin kasi we have to review it with the others na late dumating.”

Thornton arrived on Tuesday and joined practice on Wednesday to complete Mighty Sports’ roster of imports for the Jones Cup.

Despite the short preparation, Perasol said having seven imports definitely has an upside as they wage battle against several national teams including Iran, Japan, and Chinese Taipei.

“Kung meron mang challenge, ’yung shortage of preparation. Ganun pa man, imports pa rin sila. Kahit anong itakbo namin, merong threat,” said Perasol.

Perasol doesn’t plan to field five imports at the same time as they try to stay fresh, with eight games in eight days.

The UP Maroons coach said he has spoken to the imports about their roles for the tournament.

“Nung kinausap ko sila kung kaya ba nilang magsakripisyo kasi pito sila. I would have preferred four or three imports and get all the locals. But we will play eight straight days, we also want to be competitive also. And I don’t think we can do that if we only have three or four imports because sa pang-apat na laro, baka hindi na makatakbo,” said Perasol.

Perasol said the imports have so far been great, attitude-wise, all willing to play under his system.

“Lahat sila scorer. I was just being honest to them na challenge din sa amin … ‘Yung mga balik-PBA, mababait. Basta nakuha ng PBA at nakabalik, maganda ang ugali. Maganda rin ’yung character nila,” said Perasol.
