MIGHTY Sports Apparel-Philippine team is getting additional firepower with PBA veteran Joseph Yeo and two-time UAAP MVP Kiefer Ravena joining the line-up for the club’s maiden stint in the Merlion Cup basketball tournament that starts on September 21 in Singapore.
Yeo, who plays for GlobalPort Batang Pier in the PBA, is a 10-year veteran who was also an amateur standout, from his high school days at Xavier School to his stint with La Salle from 2001 to 2004.
The Batang Pier vet will be teaming up with another former Xavier Stallion and Green Archer, TY Tang, in Singapore. It will be the first time the two will be playing together since beating archrival Ateneo for the UAAP men’s basketball crown in 2001.
Yeo and Tang are part of the ‘Xavier connection’ in the Mighty Sports team to Singapore. Coaching the team will be Xavier alumnus Charles Tiu, while brothers Gabriel and Raphael Banal, part of the Xavier teams that dominated the Tiong Lian tournaments from 2001 to 2011, are also part of the roster.
For his part, Ravena led the Ateneo Blue Eagles to two championships, picking up two MVP awards during his five-year residency in the UAAP. He is expected back from the US in time for the Merlion Cup.
The inclusion of Yeo and Ravena is expected to provide more depth and versatility to the Mighty Sports Apparel squad. The team, which is supported by HC Technology Pte. Ltd., Huishi International Group Co. Ltd., Cebuana Lhuillier and Scratch It, is coming off a successful title run in the William Jones Cup Basketball Championship in Taiwan.
