MIGHTY Sports Apparels-Philippines is beefing up its roster in preparation for the Merlion Cup championship in Singapore this month with the addition of ex-PBA import and NBA journeyman Al Thornton.
Thornton, a member of the Mighty Sports Philippine team that recently won the 2016 William Jones Cup Basketball Championship in Taiwan, will once again suit up for the ball club in Singapore.
Thornton played for a number of NBA teams including the Los Angeles Clippers, the Golden State Warriors, and the Washington Wizards before signing up for the NLEX Road Warriors in the PBA.
Earlier, Mighty Sports also signed up former Gilas naturalized player Marcus Douthit.
Douthit last played for the Philippines in 2015 when he joined the Gilas cadets squad in their gold-medal run in the Southeast Asian Games also held in Singapore.
The former Los Angeles Lakers draft pick later gave way to fellow naturalized player Andray Blatche in both the 2015 Fiba Asia Championship in Changsha, China and the Olympic qualifiers in Manila last July.
Mighty Sports Apparels, which is supported by HC Technology Pte. Ltd., Huishi International Group Co. Ltd., Cebuana Lhuillier and Scratch It, will be facing a small but dangerous field of five professional ball clubs in the region, including the tough Seoul Samsung Thunders and the seasoned Shanghai Sharks.
Mighty Sports is grouped with the Thunders and the Westports Malaysia Dragons. It will face the Thunders on opening day and the Dragons two days after.
