EGYPT rode on its hot shooting early on before holding off a late uprising from Mighty Sports Philippines to hack out an 84-82 win in the Dubai International Basketball Tournament, Saturday (Sunday PH time) in Dubai.
Moatazpellah Okasha put on a shooting clinic in the second quarter, draining three triples during the period as the Egyptians turned a 22-19 deficit to a 45-33 lead at the break.
The lead ballooned to as many as 18, 60-42, near the end of the third with the Egyptians frustrating Mighty with their outside sniping and air tight defense.
The Egyptians meticulously took care of business from there as they won their first game in the tournament and sent Mighty crashing to its second straight defeat.
Justin Brownlee desperately tried to will back Mighty into the game as he fired in 16 of his 27 points in the payoff period, the effort nearly paying off for the former Barangay Ginebra import.
Mighty had a chance to send the game into overtime following two misses from Youseff Aboushousha from the stripe with six seconds to go, but Kiefer Ravena's three rattled in and out at the buzzer.
Okasha finished with 24 points, while Amro Abdelhalim added 20 to lead Egypt.
Ravena backstopped Brownlee's efforts with 10 points and five dimes even as Hasheem Thabeet and Jeron Teng added nine points apiece for the Philippine side.
