FOR Gelo Alolino, the opportunity to don the Philippine colors with Mighty Sports in the Merlion Cup in Singapore couldn't have come at a better time.
The cerebral playmaker from National University sees this stint as a big break - and another major stepping stone - ahead of the PBA Rookie Draft next month.
"Good opportunity sa akin ito kasi another experience na ma-represent country. Para sa akin magandang timing na ito," said the former National University star, who was also part of the RP Youth team led by Kiefer Ravena a few years ago.
"Talagang yun yung nasa utak ko, parang preparation na rin sa PBA kasi syempre mas malalaki at malalakas kalaban dito. Sa PBA may mga imports rin."
The September 21-25 tournament in Singapore, Alolino said, will also serve as measuring stick on his readiness to take on the country's best players in the pro league.
"Oo dito ko mag-gauge kung nasan na ako," he said. "As a court general, kailangan kong papogiin mga teammates ko. Pero kung may opportunity, mags-score at dedepensa ako."
The UAAP champion is also looking to play alongside imports Al Thornton, Hamady N'Diaye, Jones Cup MVP Dewarick Spencer, as well as naturalized player Marcus Douthit.
"Playing with these imports, alam kong marami akong matututunan. Iba rin talaga yung kalaro ko sila," he said.
