PUSHED to the limit by Supremo Lex, Mighty Sports relied on a big fourth quarter surge before preserving a 75-62 win and extending its winning streak in the PCBL Chairman’s Cup on Sunday at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center.
Playing in his first game in the tournament, new recruit Kevin Ferrer shook off the rust caused by a long layoff by delivering crucial baskets in a telling 11-0 run to keep Mighty Sports’ unblemished record.
The team improved its record to 7-0 and secured an automatic berth in the quarterfinals in this tournament supported by Ambucore, LGR, Hahn Manila, During’s Barbeque and Restaurant, Gerry’s Grill and Spalding.
The loss was the sixth straight for the Builders, whose record dropped to 1-6 to stay at the cellar.
Ferrer had a triple then made two free throws in a huge fourth quarter run to turn a close game into a rout, opening a 63-51 lead for Mighty Sports midway through the fourth period.
Supremo Lex never recovered from there.
Mighty Sports coach Mike Fermin expected a tough outing against Supremo Lex, the same team which gave them a big scare in the first round.
“They played the same way like they did in the first round. This team refused to quit. I was telling my players that we’re going to encounter tougher games, particularly against those teams at the bottom because they have nothing to lose,” said Fermin.
Kiefer Ravena and Bright Akhuetie led the way for Mighty Sports with 18 points apiece while Ferrer contributed 11.
