Matt Nieto shows way as Ateneo scores Filoil record 64-point rout of EAC

    Jun 4, 2018

ATENEO blew past the hapless Emilio Aguinaldo College, 108-44, posting the biggest winning margin in the 12-year history of the Filoil Flying V Premier Cup on Monday in San Juan.

Matt Nieto led the blistering first quarter assault where the Blue Eagles opened with a 35-11 spread and never looked back against the Generals who hours earlier the match released rotation guys like Jerome Garcia, Philip Tampoc and Dan Corilla.

The Blue Eagles doubled the Generals’ totals in almost every quarter except the fourth.

The loss was so embarrassing on the Generals side that they were forced to recall all the players that they let go immediately after the game.

“We emphasized to our players that we got to play this game professionally. Play every possession. We had a big lead but I told them to not look at the score, just the execution,” said Ateneo assistant Sandy Arespacochaga.

“We also wanted to make sure that we are crisp with our passing. There’s a tendency for our players to look at the stats. I’m happy that our players stuck with what we wanted to do,” he added.

That’s exactly what the Blue Eagles did as 30 of their 36 field goal attempts came from assists.

Matt Nieto had 14 points to lead a balanced Ateneo attack which played 14 players – each playing at least 11 minutes.

Jolo Mendoza came off the bench to add 13 points while Adrian Wong and Mike Nieto added 10 apiece for the Blue Eagles who now improved to 7-0.

Vincent Robin led the Generals with 12 points.

Far Eastern University also came out with a rout of its own as it blew past San Sebastian 78-66.

The Tamaraws limited the Stags to just 15 points in the first half as they took a 21 point lead which they took care of until the final buzzer.

Bradrey Bienes led the now 6-1 Tamaraws with 13 points as Ken Tuffin added 10 points.

RK Ilagan paced the Stags with 21 points as they fell to 3-3.
