FORMER University of the Visayas standout Mark Jonas Ababon hit huge three-pointers in crunchtime as Vescon Construction scored a 94-85 win over ASPA Formworks to top the 2017 Cebu City Mayors Cup on Monday at the Cebu City Sports Institute.
Ababon’s corner triple put Vescon in front for good, 83-80.
Ronan Isidro scored consecutive buckets, before Ababon canned another trey from the same corner to put the game out of reach, 90-81, with only 1:34 left.
Ababon finished with 23 points and was named tournament MVP.
Former Adamson player Mark Abadia added 20, Isidro finished with 17 points while, Nat Cruz notched 11.
Vescon bagged the P50,000 cash prize in the tournament organized by Joselito Manguerra.
ASPA put up an impressive stand and led, 44-36, as they scored in transition and sank three-pointers at a dizzying rate.
However, Vescon managed to control the pace behind the leadership of guard Harold Cincoflores who orchestrated a rally to close the gap at 47-50, at halftime.
Frangiel Omolon, another product of UV, led ASPA with 21 points while Russel Moneva ended up with 19. Vernon Anfone scored 13, while Romar Ponce added 12.
