Mariners win ISAA cage crown on first try

    Oct 9, 2012

LEAGUE newcomer Philippine Merchant Marine School overcame another big deficit and eked out a 57-51 overtime win over La Consolacion College-Manila to capture the 4th Interscholastic Athletic Association basketball crown on Tuesday at the Makati Coliseum.

The Mariners rallied from a 13-point third quarter deficit, played steady in the fourth and overcame the Royals in the extra period, with Dhon Reverente scoring four points before feeding Elmar Moradas for a three-point play with 59 seconds left to settle the final count.

Reverente finished with 17 points and received the Most Valuable Player award from the ISAA board headed by president Ruel dela Rosa of Manila Tytana Colleges.

PMMS, coached by ex-PBL player Aldrin Morante, entered the series as title favorites but the Blue Royals stole Game One with a 58-56 win.

But the Las Pinas-based squad forced a rubber match in Game Two when it erased a 16-point first quarter deficit to hack out a thrilling 63-61 triumph.

In the decider, La Consolacion enjoyed a 40-27 lead in the early stages of the third when Reverente, former PBA Developmental League cager Roger Malig-on, Sany Trinidad and Moradas orchestrated a comeback.

Malig-on had 14 points while Trinidad pumped in 10 markers for the Mariners, who swept the six-game classification to claim an outright finals berth in the tournament backed by Molten and Mikasa of Sonia Trading, Globe and Abot Kaya Pinoy.
