AS he held Cholee Gabayan carefully in his hands, Stephon Marbury felt helpless as he saw the kind of pain the one-year-old Filipino baby girl and liver transplant hopeful is going through.

Now the former NBA star is doing his part to help in a way he knows best.

The 36-year-old point guard is back the country for the second time in two months to banner the 'A Day of Love: Stephon Marbury Gives Back,' a charity basketball game in Pasay City that aims to raise funds for Gabayan and other patients in need of a liver transplant.

“It’s hard for me to see that. When I’m holding her, I’m actually taking in the energy of how she’s feeling,” the father of two daughters and one son admitted in a short chat with Spin.ph after the press launch of the event on Wednesday.

“Whenever you experience things like that, you just realize how blessed you are to walk, talk, hear, taste, smell, feel, and not have anything wrong with you as you get an opportunity to actually see the other side of life”, said the Coney Island, New York native.

“I’m just blessed to be able to do what it is that we’re doing to try to help,” Marbury added. “It’s a real cause, it’s a real fight for us.”

Marbury, now plying his trade in the Chinese Basketball Association, banners Team RockStar along with reigning Asean Basketball League MVP Asia Taulava in a game against PBA side Barako Bull Energy Cola in a game to be played on Friday.

Agent Sheryl Reyes, who manages both Marbury and Taulava, among other cage stars, convinced her talents to join the cause.

“I had other things going on, but this is just as important, so we made it happen,” Marbury said.

The proceeds of the charity event, organized by the National Press Club and Team Reyes, will help send the patients to Taiwan where they are going to receive a P4.5-million liver transplant, as well as to the NPC for the scholarship of some children of media practicioners.
