MAPUA and National University stayed unbeaten in three games by crushing their respective rivals in the 10th Freego Cup held recently at the Buddhacare gym in Quezon City.
The Mapua Red Robins had five players scoring in double figures and the reigning NCAA champions hacked out an 86-71 victory over the La Salle Greenies.
With Will Gozum and Rhyyan Amsali at the helm, the Red Robins turned a tight contest into a rout by exploding for 27 points in the second quarter, giving them a commanding 52-34 halftime lead.
Not to be left out, the NU Bullpups put on a balanced attack on the way to a breezy 92-67 win over the Lyceum Junior Pirates in the tournament serving as a pre-season tournament for NCAA and UAAP teams.
University of the East, on the other hand, made heads turn with a stunning 87-84 win over defending champion Chiang Kai Shek College to improve its record to 1-1 in the event also supported by Smart, Powerhouse and Home Depot.
The loss was the third straight for the Blue Dragons who continued to miss several key players after playing in the recent Palarong Pambansa.
Agem Miranda and Andrei Dulalia produced double-double for the Junior Warriors (17 and 14 points and 10 and 11 rebounds, respectively) while Jason Celis paced the Blue Dragons with 23 points.
Gozum led the Red Robin with 15 points and 11 boards while Miguel Pangilinan buried three triples to topscore for the Bullpups with 13 points in just 18 minutes of play.
