JESSIE Saitanan led five players in double figures as Mapua walloped the Philippine Under-18 team, 100-70, on Monday to finally notch its first win in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.
Saitanan had 20 points, Joseph Eriobu added 19 and the Cardinals won after losing four straight games in Group B.
Mapua coach Atoy Co, however, wasn’t satisfied with the victory as the Cardinals trailed, 12-24, at the end of the first quarter against the U-18 Nationals, who are mostly college freshmen.
The Cardinals finally got their rhythm as they finished the third with an 11-0 run en route to a 64-59 lead at the end of the fourth.
“I don’t like that attitude na playing half-heartedly,” said Co. “I’ve been telling the first five not to reserve energy and go all out.”
“There is nothing to be proud of because this game, we are expected to win. They should not be taken lightly,” Co said.
Josan Nimes and Exequiel Biteng each had 15 points, while Rey Cantos had 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Cardinals.
