DON’T be surprised if more notable names from the NBA will join superstars Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers, Brooklyn Nets veteran Paul Pierce, and Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard in possibly two tune-up games against Gilas Pilipinas.
Top Gilas patron and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Manny V. Pangilinan said national coach Chot Reyes is still in the process of talking to other potential NBA stars, who could help beef up the all-star team seeing action in the exhibition match dubbed `PLDT Last Home Stand’ set July 22-23 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“May kinakasaup pa si coach Chot, pero tingnan natin kung madadagdagan 'yun o hindi,” Pangilinan told Spin.ph, adding the games will also be for the benefit of MVP Sports Foundation and the PDRF.
Pangilinan said should the “other NBA stars” be open to the idea of playing in the benefit game, he will talk to them as well.
“Kung dumami sila (other NBA stars), eh di kausapin natin kung puwede ba kayo maglaro. But it’s up to them,” he added.
On the other hand, Reyes has revealed that he is looking to tap Gilas' newest naturalized player, Brooklyn Nets center Andray Blatche, for the benefit game.
The benefit game against the NBA stars will serve as Gilas’ final tune-up matches at home before competing in the Fiba-World Cup in Spain beginning on August 30.
The national squad resumes its training on Tuesday.
Gilas then leaves on July 9 to play in the weeklong Fiba-Asia Cup in Wuhan, China, where the Filipinos will try to improve on their fourth-place finish during the 2011 edition.
